The Real Truth in Duluth - in response to Chuck Horton’s misinformation related to Twin Ports Boxing This statement is not written on behalf of any organization or group but rather from an individual who has devoted years of service to amateur boxing in the State of Minnesota and doesn’t want to see the sport damaged. It is important not only for those individuals in this community but also those around the State to know the truth about Twin Ports Boxing (TPB) and the allegations being made by Chuck Horton (Coach C).
Duluth’s 9 member City Council approved the lease agreement by and between the City of Duluth and TPB in the year 2000. This, of course is contrary to Coach C’s contention that the space was made available to TPB as a result of an active participant of TPB, whose father is employed by the City of Duluth. From a statement provided by the City of Duluth to the local news media in response to these allegations, I quote "The City of Duluth has many nonprofit organizations utilizing our facilities and feel this is an appropriate use and follows city policy. "
Why doesn’t Coach C attempt to change city policy rather than attack a non profit organization who benefits from the City’s current policy? In Chuck Horton’s interview with KBJR television which aired on November 23rd Coach C stated "If they're going to give my competitors a free space I want to be able to use that building it's a city building it's for the citizens of Duluth and I want to use it as well." The very next day during Carinda Horton’s radio show, she stated that they, Horton’s Gym, had nowhere to go as they just moved out of the Lake Place Building on Superior St, shortly after having moved in. Is it policy they’re looking to change or an act of desperation?
TPB is a not for profit organization which was registered with the Secretary of State in this manner in 1993. Horton’s Gym, Inc. was registered as a for profit corporation in 1999. TPB has operated out of the same facility since 2000. During that same time Horton’s Gym has occupied at least 4 facilities…. Why so many?
In an open letter to the members of the St. Louis County Commission, dated March 30, 2002 which appears to be written by Coach C, referencing the alleged tax payer funds, I quote “It is, furthermore, not the concern of Charles Horton, whether the Twins Ports Boxing club wants to return to an independent status or not. It is also not the concern of Charles Horton whether or not the Twin Ports Boxing Club receives grant money.” TPB has always been independent. “In any event Horton’s Gym will continue to function without any reliance on grant money by putting on monthly boxing competitions.”
The contradictions in Coach C’s 2002 letter to the St. Louis County Board along with his recent press releases are confounding as they seemingly refer to the same “tax payer funds”. Is Coach C suggesting that any youth recreational sports offered to the public by a not for profit entity, not receive assistance? Is Coach C also suggesting that community hockey, soccer and baseball programs, which are sponsored in part by the Duluth School District and City, not continue if city property is utilized for games? And what about current plans to build a skateboard park at the city’s Wheeler Field Athletic Complex? Should that park not exist because a for profit park already does? More importantly why should TPB cease to operate when Coach C’s gym which is for profit cannot seemingly support itself?
Referencing the idea that TPB has not proven to be successful with any “measurable achievements”. I think there may be a couple… • Duluthian, Wayne Putnam -1996 UMGG Champion -1997 UMGG Runner Up • Duluthian, Dan Radloff -1997 UMGG Champion -1997 American Boxing Classic • Duluthian, Tim McShane -1997 UMGG Runner Up -1999 UMGG Runner Up -2008 UMGG Champion • Duluthian, James Gilberston -2005 UMGG Runner Up • Duluthian, Craig Butler -2004 Silver Gloves Nationals -2006 Junior Olympic Nationals -2007 UMGG Champion -2008 UMGG Champion -2008 World GG Runner Up
It is important for all of us to incorporate truth, integrity, honor and kindness into our everyday lives. If we do not we risk contributing to the erosion of the very things we strive for.
Sincerely, Aaron Resberg

Reprinted below is a letter from Aaron Resberg. Hortons have responded to this letter. Their comments are in Blue in the email I got. I copied it here and am not sure if the bold and blue is translating. So I've Clicked Bold and Changed the font in an effort to identify the response. Although this may not address all the questions we have, I do believe it clarifies the issue a bit more. I anticipate hearing a report from the Mayor's Office about the meeting with Hortons today.
The Real Truth in Duluth
-the facts on Twin Ports Boxing
This statement is not written on behalf of any organization or group but rather from an individual who has devoted years of service to amateur boxing in the State of Minnesota and doesn’t want to see the sport damaged. It is important not only for those individuals in this community but also those around the State to know the truth about Twin Ports Boxing (TPB) and the allegations being made by Chuck Horton (Coach C).
Hortons:[g]Chuck Horton has no intent of damaging the sport of boxing. As a sixth generation boxer, the son of legendary trainer and youth advocate, Archie Horton, and someone who has dedicated much of his life to boxing, this is clearly not his intent. There is good reason to make this information public and raise awareness to the situation.[/g] (end response)
[g]Hortons:The below statement is proof that in the 2001-2002 Jesus Rosas at time president of Twin Ports BoxingThere was signage made for the merger of the companies
ROLL CALL PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE APPROVAL OF MINUTES - April 22, 2002.
02-0334R - RESOLUTION ISSUING TEMPORARY ON SALE NONINTOXICATING MALT LIQUOR LICENSES TO PLAYER'S SOFTBALL TEAM (EARLY BIRD TOURNAMENT), WHEELER FIELD, AND TWIN PORTS BOXING CLUB (HORTON'S TWIN PORTS BOXING), 332 WEST MICHIGAN STREET.[/g] (end response)
Hortons: [g]Horton’s Gym has a history of making contributions to the community with donations to a variety of local non-profits, schools, and fundraisers. Horton’s Gym provides free boxing instructions to area youth and helps foster positive individual growth. There are countless examples of young people who have benefited from the program that have gone on to lead successful adult lives. The press release made their intentions clear: “ After much consideration and years of frustration, Horton’s Gym, their professional boxers Zach Walters, Andy Kolle, Gary Eyer, RJ Laase and Andson Griggs, amateur boxers Al Sands, Jorey Olson and all the way down to the youngest boxers and their families, have made the decision to bring this to the public’s attention.”[/g] (end response)
Hortons: [g]Why so many? Businesses renting property have a variety of reasons why it may be difficult to remain in the same place. The most recent lease agreement was cancelled since the owner sold the building to a company that wanted to use the space. In June, Horton’s Gym was destroyed by a fire that originated in a lower level business. The VFW was sold on Contract for deed as well. Regardless of the unforeseen situations regarding to space rental, Twin Ports Boxing receives a free space compliments of the City of Duluth.[/g] (end response)
Hortons" [g]This is evidence of the past relationship between Horton’s Gym and Twin Port’s Boxing. Horton’s gym has continued to take the high road in regards to dealing with Twin Port’s Boxing and the adult members involved with the gym. Over the years, many slanderous comments towards Horton’ Gym have been documented from witnesses who have heard negative remarks from Tim McShane, Aaron Resberg, and others associated with Twin Port’s Boxing. Horton’s Gym has been legally advised to keep accurate records in the event the matter is handled by the courts.[/g] (end response)
Hortons:[g]Horton’s Gym is referring to Twin Port’s Boxing only. Are those entities competing with a local for profit business?[/g](end response)
More importantly why should TPB cease to operate when Coach C’s gym which is for profit cannot seemingly support itself?
Hortons:[g]Horton’s Gym does support itself and helps to support other local businesses by promoting shows. Twin Ports is not self sustaining…it relies on public funding to operate.[/g](end response)
Referencing the idea that TPB has not proven to be successful with any “measurable achievements”. I think there may be a couple…
· Duluthian, Wayne Putnam -1996 UMGG Champion
-1997 UMGG Runner Up
· Duluthian, Dan Radloff -1997 UMGG Champion
-1997 American Boxing Classic
· Duluthian, Tim McShane -1997 UMGG Runner Up
-1999 UMGG Runner Up
-2008 UMGG Champion
· Duluthian, James Gilberston -2005 UMGG Runner Up
· Duluthian, Craig Butler -2004 Silver Gloves Nationals
-2006 Junior Olympic Nationals
-2007 UMGG Champion
-2008 UMGG Champion
-2008 World Golden Gloves Runner Up
Hortons:[g]Chuck Horton has trained all of these fighters with the exception of James Gilbertson. Chuck Horton trained all of these fighters free of charge to include Tim McShane and Aaron Resberg (fthe author of this letter). Chuck Horton taught all of these fighters the fundamentals of boxing.[/g] (end response)
It is important for all of us to incorporate truth, integrity, honor and kindness into our everyday lives. If we do not we risk contributing to the erosion of the very things we strive for.
Hortons: [g]Beautiful quote…Horton’s Gym is looking for the same in return.[/g] (end response)
Sincerely,
Aaron Resberg

When was it that you trained Tim? or Dan? 6th generation boxer? lol again with the stretching of the truth......Im just wondering why a big gym like yours that is "self sustaining" would go after a gym (tpb) that has around 10 members? You want there $ to Charles? I think that you should have listen to your wifes show this mourning....you might have some greed issues... what about the property on Michigan street? Done you still owe them several thousands? Ya do. You screwed that guy over just like you screw over pretty much every one you deal with.
the courts were notified about TPB and associates slandering comments? what about you thinking you can beat up the world? you talk about fighting TPB coaches openly on the radio. Do you for get all the bs that you say? And SawBox? lol its either you Chuck or some parent that your hand feeding BS to. But again, way to go whoever you are (chuck). Its sad that you want to take $ from a gym that you claim is your competitor but like you said isn't self sustaining and doesn't put on shows like you. TPB has amateur fighters ...not pros...you cant make THAT much $ from them.....Oh thats right you take amateur fighters get them a hand full of fights and then turn them pro so you can make $ off of them...Good job.....i guess thats 1 way to feed your family. lol...sharky......lol. yup that you... good job

Who holds Twin Ports boxing accountable for their use of funds? The last time I checked, I haven't seen Twin Ports Boxing hold any amatuer shows.
In my last post I pointed out that Horton moved his pro shows to Superior, WI, thus taking away revenue from Duluth. I didn't factor in that Horton and Coach Chad now have an average of 10 amatuer shows a year planned for Duluth:
Superior: 3 pro shows/year. Average attendance: 2,500
Total: 7,500 people.
Duluth: 10 Amatuer shows/year. Average attendance: 800
Total: 8,000 people.
It seems to me that Chuck has invested his OWN money into the kids that work out at his gym and has now positioned his business to almost get an equal amount of paying customers to events in the Twin Port's cities over a 12 month period.
So that brings me back to my question......Who holds Twin Ports Boxing accountable for how they run their gym? Do they lose financing if they only have about 10 kids working out? Are they supposed to go above and beyond to try hold amatuer shows to try become self sufficient and give not only Twin Ports kids opportunities but also kids traveling in from places like St. Cloud and the Twin Cities? I haven't heard of Twin Ports boxing having one show in Duluth.
So basically here's what I'm asking: Does Chuck Horton just want equal treatment for seemingly doing more for the youth in the Twin Ports? Why does Twin Ports Boxing feel the need to, in my opinion, come close to slandering Chuck Horton and his business? I never once saw Horton call for them to lose their funding.
So if you owned a car wash and the city came around and opened a "free car wash" right next door wouldn't you be pissed off too?
How the hell can this "Lefty" kid question Chuck Horton's practice of turning people pros? Who in this state is doing better with a stable of pro boxers right now? What does Twin Ports boxing brag about as far as the pro game is concerned? Joe Lorenzi? Please. Chuck Horton has taken his fighters and gotten them the experience in the gym they NEED to be quality pro fighters. All he has done is create them a home base to fight out of and develop properly......Horton's shows pay fighters and opponents better than most around the area......You think this guy is concerned about making money off of his fighters? HE PUTS HIS OWN MONEY INTO THE GYM!

Joe I brought your name into it because you're the only pro fighter out of TP boxing that I thought I knew of, guess I was wrong. My bad. Why were you so insulted as being mentioned as a member of TP boxing? Why would mentioning you as a part of TP boxing be considered slander? That's just misinformation my friend. When did I call you a "puss?" Were you just out there looking for someone to bring up your name so you could jump on them or what?
Not worried about your petty little challenges. I like to be successful in the endeavors I choose to pursue and boxing in the ring(as I have found out in the gym for myself) isn't one of them. I don't need 6 pro fights to figure that out or validate my views on the sport.
Last time I checked Jason, Allen and Antonio aren't fighting for Rice Street. Antonio isn't even in the state.
You say "Zach and Andy are good thats it." So you're saying that Gary Eyer, RJ Laase, Andson Griggs and Skuli Armannsson have no skill?
Also, why are you never on Chuck Horton pro cards? Don't you live in the Twin Ports?

1...I support TPB coaches and fighters 110%. I don't have a prob. with being formally involved as a amateur fighter and coach of TPB, I just didn't see the need to bring up my name nor did i think it was necessary to bing my name up in a negative fashion.
2....I stand corrected on Jason and Allen's and Antonio J's current training location...
3....Skuli ..i never mentioned him, I've never seen him fight....and he lives in another country? Andson Griggs? No i Don't think Griggs is good...on any level...I don't give respect to people who take the sport as a joke...he trained for approx. 2 years b4 he turned pro...he had maybe tops 10 fights... no turny experience...ive personally spared Griggs ...No dis respect to Griggs but turning pro isn't a place for on the job traning.... that goes for all the rest of them....... again minus Zach and Andy
yes i live in Duluth....Last time i fought In Duluth On a Horton's Card I wasn't paid...thats 1 reason... the others are between me and Chuck...

Here are a few of the letters of support written to the Mayor on behalf of the Horton's. There are those that are definately Horton Haters, but his success with young people cannot be denied.
Letters: I serve the boxing community as a ringside physician. My job has taken me to many locations and I have crossed the paths of many boxing promotions, gyms and fighters. Horton's Gym in Duluth, MN is one of the finest I have come around or been associated. Their fighters and staff are very respectful of the doctors, the promoters, the venue and all associated with the world of boxing; they are a credit to the sport of boxing and lead by example. Anything that the city of Duluth can do to promote or assist Horton's Gym should be done to preserve this gym as a cornerstone in the community and in the boxing world. Horton's gym has and will continue to shape world class boxers and this is not only good for boxing, it is beneficial for Duluth. --BM, Iowa
I have recently heard about the situation in regards to allowing all of the youth in Duluth to be able to use the Cities Facilities. I have worked with Chuck Horton on a business level now for almost 10 years and have witnessed first hand what he has done for the youth in our community. –JZ, Minnesota My nephew's have benefited tremendously, both personally and professionally, through their association with Horton's Gym. In their late teens and early adulthood, they navigated some pretty rough waters, and were supported along the way by the Horton's. Horton's have been an active part of their success story. The boxing hasn't been just a sport or an outlet, but a means of bringing these young men to a point of acheivement, purpose and pride. Not only in the area of athletics, but also in their personal lives. The Horton's don't just invest themselves in the athlete, but in the whole person. It would be a shame to have anything get in the way of their outreach in the Duluth community.—JA, Minnesota
Without Chuck and his team, I honestly do not know where my family member would be today. Instead of "on the streets", he is well educated, well trained, and a success....thanks to God and to Chuck and Carinda Horton. What Chuck, Carinda and his Gym bring to the Twin Ports is far beyond what any money can do.....yet, funny as it sounds, money, and support, are what is NEEDED in order to continue to help kids who are so in need of someone who CARES, who SUPPORTS, and who INSPIRES. It is our youth of today who make for our lives of tomorrow. My family and I have witnessed what the involvement of Horton's Gym can do in a young person's life.—MS, Minnesota

The nice thing about a forum like this is that both sides get fair opportunity to let the public know what is going on at a place that is neutral like this website. Sawbox, I can only assume you A. Somehow have ties to the Mayor, which would explain you having access to his letters. Or B. have ties with Horton's Gym which would explain you having access to letters sent to the Mayor. My guess is that B would be correct. If that true, it would really mute any validity to those letters. One can guess that you wrote them yourself or somebody close to Horton did. It really wouldn't mean much more then supporting letters from his wife or family. I don't honestly believe that tons of Horton haters exsist here. I think the issue is more about us not understanding the timing or true reason's behind his threats to the mayor or Twin Ports with all of this. Horton seems to be the little boy who tells his parents he didn't bully the neighbor with his fingers crossed behind his back, grinning to himself. After years of this kind of odd behavior adding up, the parents start to wonder just how innocent their son is after all.

Here's another letter that was sent to the mayor...but I wrote it myself.
November 25, 2008
Dear Mayor Ness,
My name is Cindy Schumacher; I am the CEO of St Cloud Area Golden Gloves Boxing, a 501c3 youth sports organization dedicated to Amateur boxing. I am also a registered level three official of USA Boxing, Treasurer for Minnesota LBC #30, and parent of a successful amateur boxer.
I am writing to you on behalf of the Twin Ports boxing club. They are one of many non-profit gyms in Minnesota that provide immeasurable services to the youth of their respective communities. I have personally worked with Brett Kalbaugh and Aaron Resberg at many local, state, regional, and national amateur boxing events. They are outstanding coaches who embody the true selflessness and generosity so often found in amateur boxing coaches.
They have done an excellent job of training their young boxers to be champions in and out of the ring. Over the years they have produced some very successful boxers including most recently Craig Butler who competed admirably in the Golden Gloves World Tournament last year.
The non-profit gyms provide an outlet for youth who may or may not have the funds to attend a “for profit gym”. It gives kids an opportunity to excel in a nontraditional sport not offered by their schools. It builds self esteem and character and the recognition that hard work and discipline bring.
This attack on them by a for profit private enterprise makes me extremely angry. Chuck Horton is not even a registered coach or member of USA Boxing. He has a long history of promoting professional fighters. Sir, that is comparing pickles to pomegranates. Right, there is no comparison. Horton’s gym was not even registered with USA boxing until the middle of this year. He has not shown any interest in amateur boxing until coach Chad Brenna came along and started working with them under the name of the Adam Van Allstine Boxing Club, also a non-profit organization.
The notable accomplishments that Horton’s lay claim to all stems from the professional boxers, again, nothing to do with the amateur program for which Twin Ports has for so long been an integral part of. I would hope that the good people of Duluth and St Louis County will continue to support the reputable and commendable program that Twin Ports Boxing is providing your area with. They have the complete and total support of the St Cloud Area Golden Gloves Boxing Club and all of its members.
Should you require any additional information I can be reached at any hour by cell phone 320-291-6058.
Cindy Schumacher
I know several others who have also written to the mayor, but I'll leave it up to them if they want to post their own.

Who is a world class boxer out Snakey's gym? Getting knocked out by Paul Williams in a 1:37 of the first round is not world class. Fighting for an African belt against a guy from St. Louis is not world class.
hey Cory, you have testimony of an athlete not getting paid by the Snake. tsk, tsk, sad....

Camelot, let me say this BOTH Zach and Andy are world class, both as boxers and the way they carry themselves. You have also said that you don't know Chuck personally but have "heard" about him. Maybe you should meet the guy before you form an opinion.

8 years later and Horton is still a sack of nuts.
I didn't even fight at TPB but I still attended occasionally and developed fundlementals of boxing and life skills the coaches gave me FREE of charge.
Also, in regards to whom ever said that Horton invests his own money... No, he invests the money he made my swindling kids out Sign up fees.
To go Pro and to be pro are completely different things.
